Workshop summary
Accessibility refers to how easy something is to reach, use, see or understand. By creating accessible content, the information we provide on our websites will be easy to access, readable and understandable for every visitor.

Did you know that around 14% of students at the University of Dundee declare a disability each year? And that 10% of people in the UK have dyslexia and 8% of all men in the UK are colour blind?

We must ensure all of our web content is accessible, not only because this is the right thing to do, but also because:

• It’s a legal requirement under the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2018 and the Equality Act 2010
• Any one of us can be affected by temporary or situational impairments like an injured hand
• Your content will reach a wider audience
• Accessibility improves the experience for everyone

Join accessibility specialist Steve Burrows to get more insights into accessibility so you can start creating content that reaches further and will be enjoyed by everyone.

Aims and Objectives
This session aims to provide:
• More insight into why accessibility is essential for all web content creators
• An overview of web accessibility (without the technical jargon)
• Live demos of assistive technologies like screen readers
• Instructions on how to try the assistive technologies built into your computer and mobile device
• A look at the techniques used by our audiences to adapt your content to meet their specific needs
• Practical knowledge on how to create accessible content for the web, including how to structure your page, improve readability, use colour effectively, write suitable alternative text for images, add transcripts and captions to videos, create better links, and more
• Reassurance that accessible content isn’t difficult, technical, or requires an entirely new approach
• A breakdown of who will benefit when you publish accessible content (including non-native English speakers)

Pre-session Requirements
None.
